Proposition 37 requires companies to label the raw and processed food they put on the market properly and indicate whether the product is genetically engineered or contains genetically engineered materials. It also prohibits calling the products “natural”.
The products that are exempt from this are organic products that unintentionally contains genetically engineered materials for certain purposes like medication.
The pros for this proposition are that consumers will be able to know what the products they are buying will contain. People can avoid the products that are genetically engineered. The cons for the proposition are the prices of these products will go up. The people who don’t really mind that their foods are genetically engineered will be affected greatly because they never asked for this proposition and they will be forced to pay a higher price for the products just because of the labeling. Another con is that the ones against this proposition are big companies that can give a ton of money to the funds used by the groups that will fight the proposition. The funds against the propositions greatly overwhelm the funds to support it.
If I could vote for it I would because I would rather pay more for the products and know what it’s made off rather than just buying things without thinking that there might be a better option instead of that certain product. But I can’t vote so I’ll just have to hope that it passes and becomes a law.
